What is Thyroid ?

Thyroid gland is a small butterfly shaped gland situated just below the Adam’s apple and above the place where the two collar bones meet. One cannot feel a normal thyroid. It is only when the thyroid gland gets enlarged that one can feel it. The one and only function of the thyroid gland is to produce thyroid hormones. These thyroid hormones regulate the metabolism of the whole body. The metabolism of the body is the process which indicates the way the body uses energy.. A change in the level of thyroid hormones can affect body metabolism and cause many changes including weight, mood, temperature regulation, etc.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”5143″ img_size=”medium”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

What is Hypothyroidism?

Under-activity of the thyroid, called hypothyroidism, is the result of too little thyroid hormone being produced. It is five times commoner in women than men, affecting up to ten per cent of women over the age of 50. It typically produces weight gain, fatigue and listlessness, cold sensitivity, skin dryness, fluid retention, constipation, loss of libido, anxiety and depression. In addition, it may cause brittle nails, lustreless hair and diminished . In fact, about 12% of people will experience abnormal thyroid function at some point during their lives.

Also, thyroid problems increase with age and may affect adults differently than children.

At the most basic level, thyroid hormone is responsible for coordinating energy, growth and metabolism in your body.

Problems can occur when this hormone’s levels are too high or low.

Hypothyroidism, or low levels of thyroid hormone, slows your metabolism and decreases growth or repair of many parts of the body. The primary function of the thyroid is to control the body’s metabolism (the rate at which the cells perform duties essential to living).

To control the metabolism, the thyroid produces the hormones T4 and T3, which tell the body’s cells how much energy to use. These hormones act on almost all the tissues and organs of the body. They help control your body temperature, influence your heart rate, and regulate the production of protein.

A properly functioning thyroid will maintain the right amount of hormones needed to keep your body’s metabolism functioning at a satisfactory rate.

Features of Hypothyroidism:
• Caused by reduced amounts of thyroid hormone in circulation.
• Iodine deficiency and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (an autoimmune disorder) are the main causes of hypothyroidism.
• Symptoms include extreme fatigueconstipationdepression, intolerance to cold, puffiness of the face, weight gain, hoarseness of voice, increased cholesterol level, muscle aches, joint pains, and menstrual issues, are some of the common symptoms.[/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”5139″ img_size=”large” add_caption=”yes” css_animation=”fadeIn”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
